Etymology
Provenance
Brahmacharini honours the second form of the Navadurga, the goddess of penance and devotion, whose long austerity is remembered as the very picture of discipline and focus. The painting translates her into a contemporary Cubist idiom, building a walking figure of quiet resolve from interlocking planes of colour.
Brahmacharini walks barefoot, holding a string of dark prayer beads in one hand and a small water vessel, the kamandalu, in the other – the two attributes of the ascetic. Her white sari, striped with bands of red, falls in sharp angular folds, and a tall crown and gold halo frame her lowered gaze. Around her, rounded arches and rectangular blocks in sage, red, ochre and blush form a rhythmic, patchwork ground.
The palette of ivory, brick red, sage green, ochre and soft pink is laid down in muted, textured tones, giving the work the gentle wear of an aged surface. The contrast between the pale, upright figure and the dense geometric background lends her a quiet, luminous focus.
