Etymology
Provenance
Katyayani depicts the sixth form of the Navadurga, the warrior goddess who stands for strength and resistance to adharma. Rendered in a restrained Cubist language of faceted planes and arcs, the painting presents the warrior in serene composure: a goddess armed and ready, yet calm in expression.
Katyayani is seated upon her lion, a crescent moon rising from her jewelled crown. Two of her hands are raised, palms open, in gestures of blessing and reassurance, while another holds a pink lotus and another grips an upright sword, her traditional attributes. Round gold earrings, a fine ivory veil and a large gold halo frame her face, and the lion's head, built from angular golden facets, rests calmly at her side.
A subdued palette of ivory, blush, warm gold and sandy brown is set against slate grey, charcoal and black, giving the composition a quiet, sculptural gravity. Clean geometric divisions in the background and the soft, weave-like texture of the surface lend the work a contemporary elegance.
