Etymology
Provenance
Kushmanda celebrates the fourth form of the Navadurga, the creator of the cosmic egg, whose radiance is said to have brought light to a dark universe. Here that creative energy is expressed through a dynamic Cubist composition in which the goddess, her lion and her attributes are assembled from glowing, interlocking planes.
Kushmanda is shown with several arms, holding a pink lotus, an arrow and a bow, while a round golden vessel rests in her lap. She wears a rose-red sari, a tall crown and heavy gold earrings, and a vast gold halo rises behind her. Her lion emerges at the lower left, mouth open, its mane and head built from angular ochre facets.
Rose, coral, ochre and gold glow against deep navy and slate, giving the painting a warm, luminous centre within a cooler, darker field. The confident geometry and rhythmic repetition of gold bangles and facets lend the work energy and movement, in keeping with a goddess of creation.
