Etymology
Provenance
Mahagauri honours the eighth form of the Navadurga, the pure and radiant one, symbolising purity, peace and renewal. Rendered in a luminous Cubist palette dominated by white and ivory, the painting expresses her radiance through light, open planes rather than ornament.
Mahagauri is seated with her white bull, its calm face turned to the left, and holds a golden trident in one hand while raising the other, palm open, in a gesture of reassurance. Draped in white with touches of red and ochre, she wears a simple crown set with a red jewel and a round gold earring, her gaze lowered. A large gold halo and a sweep of black behind her throw her pale form into relief.
Ivory, warm white and pale grey dominate, accented by rust red, ochre and black. The faceted planes catch the light like folded paper, giving the work a clean, serene brightness in keeping with a goddess of purity and peace.
