Etymology
Provenance
Skandamata portrays the fifth form of the Navadurga, the mother of Lord Kartikeya, revered as the embodiment of motherly love and protection. The painting gives this tender image a contemporary Cubist structure, enfolding mother and child within a richly patterned field of arches and blocks.
The goddess sits upon a striding lion, holding the young six-headed Kartikeya close against her, his crowned faces arranged in a row. In two raised hands she holds pink lotuses, while another is lifted in blessing. She wears a jewelled crown, gold earrings and a faceted sari in red, ochre, ivory and green, and a broad gold halo glows behind her. The lion, built from golden triangular facets, turns its calm face to the right.
Teal, sage, brick red, ochre and blush are arranged in a patchwork of rounded arches and squares, giving the composition a warm, enveloping rhythm. The intricate faceting of figure and lion, set within this ordered background, conveys both strength and tenderness.
