Etymology
Provenance
'Dancing Ganesha Within the Roundels' is a Kalamkari painting in which a many-armed Ganesha dances in a temple shrine, surrounded by a ring of circular scenes. Placing a central deity within a frame of smaller narratives lets the painting be read both as an icon and as a sequence of stories.
Ganesha stands at the centre beneath a scalloped arch and a tiered roof, his several arms holding a goad, a noose, an axe and other attributes, one foot raised in dance. Above and below him, rows of arched niches hold five smaller dancing forms of Ganesha. Around the central panel, twenty-four roundels show pairs and small groups of figures, dancing, walking beneath trees and gathering in conversation, set among pink flowers.
Black, cream and rose pink lead the palette, with touches of violet blue in the pillars and the roof. The figures are drawn in fine cream line on black, which gives the painting a crisp, engraved quality, and an outer border of paisleys and flowers completes the frame. It is an elegant, detailed piece for a living room, a study or a prayer space.
