Etymology
Provenance
'Ganesha in the Emerald Medallion' is a Kalamkari painting in which a seated Ganesha fills a green circular medallion at the heart of an elaborate frame of narrative panels. The arrangement of a central icon surrounded by stories gives the painting both focus and depth, with the green ground setting the deity apart like a jewel.
Ganesha sits on a throne within an arched shrine, holding a lotus and other attributes, his trunk curled and his body adorned with jewellery. The medallion sits inside an octagon with small figures in the corners. Above and below, three large panels show figures with bows, trees and animals, and narrow strips hold rows of smaller figures. Around the edge, a continuous border of rounded panels carries further scenes of figures, animals and a palanquin.
Black, cream and emerald green lead the palette, with fine lines of red and touches of orange in the borders. The cream figures stand out sharply against the black, and the single green medallion draws the eye immediately to the centre. It is an ornate, balanced painting for a prayer room, a study or a living room.
