Etymology
Provenance
'Shrinathji in Coral and Maroon' covers the picture with a soft coral ground and uses maroon cloths for contrast. The structure remains that of a Pichwai from Nathdwara, with the deity at the centre and cows along the borders, but the colour scheme is gentler and more earthy than the primary reds and blues of other versions.
Shrinathji has a dark-blue face beneath a crown and a peacock-feather halo. His raised left hand holds a maroon cloth, and a second maroon cloth sweeps to the left. A yellow skirt in pleated tiers, edged with gold and decorated with small leaf marks, flares around his crossed feet. Pink lotuses, a petal garland and pearl strands decorate the figure. White cows with red marks stand around the border among tiny flowers, and two red roundels with white dots sit at the base.
Coral, maroon and yellow make a warm, harmonious palette, with the blue of the face and feet as the only cool colour. The coral is applied in a soft, slightly mottled wash, and small red and white flowers give it a delicate surface pattern. It is a refined painting, particularly suited to warm-toned interiors.
