Etymology
Provenance
'Shrinathji in Garnet and Gold' places the deity within a deep garnet niche, bordered by a broad field of bright yellow. It follows the Nathdwara layout of a framed central figure with a procession of cows, but the dark red interior makes the figure glow, as if lit by a lamp in a temple sanctum. The painting has a rich, jewel-like depth.
Shrinathji wears a coral-pink skirt in pleated tiers edged in gold, with a green cloth lifted in his left hand and a second green cloth sweeping out at his side. His blue face is set beneath a crown and a peacock-feather halo, with lotus buds rising behind and a pink garland running down both sides of a pearl-white chest. Twelve white cows with red hand marks circle the yellow border, which is dotted with small red flowers, and two coral roundels sit at the lower corners above a white platform and a pink cushion.
Garnet, yellow and coral make up a warm palette, interrupted only by the green cloth and the blue face. White dots scatter across the garnet niche like sparks, and a thin black line closes the painting at the edge. The strong contrast between the dark niche and the bright border gives the work real presence on a wall.
