Etymology
Provenance
'Shrinathji in Marigold Yellow' is a Pichwai painting built on a single, sunlit colour. The niche and the ground share the same yellow, so the figure of Shrinathji appears to stand in an open field rather than a closed frame. The classic elements of a Nathdwara hanging, the central deity, the rows of cows and the platform, are all present, but they are softened by the warmth of the field.
Shrinathji has a blue face and a jewelled crown with a peacock-feather halo, and his raised left arm carries a coil of orange-red cloth. A mint-green skirt flares around him, trimmed in gold, with a second orange-red cloth sweeping to the left. Pink lotuses rise behind his shoulder and a pink petal garland frames his pearl necklaces. Twelve white cows with red marks and orange hooves stand around the border among small red dots, and two maroon roundels sit at the base beside a white platform.
Marigold yellow, mint green and orange-red form a fresh, warm palette, and the maroon roundels at the bottom give it a firm base. The thin outline of the niche is drawn in red and gold, so it is felt rather than seen, which lets the cows and the figure float on the field. It is a cheerful painting that can lift a quiet wall.
