Etymology
Provenance
'Shrinathji in Saffron Orange' fills the whole picture with one warm colour, using the niche and border to separate the zones only by a fine line of pattern. It is a Pichwai painting in the classic Nathdwara arrangement, and the single orange ground gives it the glow of a lit lamp. The cows, the deity and the platform all appear as if they have been placed on one continuous field.
Shrinathji stands with his blue face framed by a crown and peacock-feather halo, wearing a yellow skirt in tiers of pleats trimmed with gold, and holding a green cloth in his raised left hand with another trailing out to the left. Pink lotuses, a petal garland and several pearl strands decorate the figure. Twelve white cows with red hand marks stand around the border among fine gold dots, and two yellow roundels with radiating lines sit at the base.
Orange, yellow and green are the leading colours, and the blue of the face and the feet gives them a cool anchor. The orange is painted unevenly, so the field has a faint, hand-made mottling, and tiny yellow dots lift the surface without crowding it. This is a vivid, welcoming painting, suited to an entrance or a prayer room.
