Etymology
Provenance
'Shrinathji in the Haveli Arcade' is an architectural Pichwai in soft stone and sepia tones. The deity stands within a scalloped arch, between slender columns, in a setting that resembles a carved haveli interior. It is an unusual rendering, trading the bright grounds of other Pichwai for a muted, sculptural look.
Shrinathji stands at the centre with a gold halo, a raised left arm and a flared skirt, framed by pearl strands and a petal garland, with lotus buds at his side. Two green roundels with golden centres flank him, and a golden pot, a staff and a red item rest on the floor. Above, a latticed panel and a banana-leaf motif rise to the top of the frame, and a row of four cows in relief runs along the base. The painting is framed in dark wood, with a floral border of red and blue blossoms on a green and gold ground.
Sepia, gold and cream dominate, with the blue of the deity and the green roundels as bright accents. The architecture is painted to resemble worn stone, with soft shading and fine ornament. It is a calm, scholarly piece that suits a study, a library or a quiet corner.
