Handpainted – Pichwai – Shrinathji on Lilac Beneath the Golden Canopy

'Shrinathji on Lilac Beneath the Golden Canopy' is a Pichwai painting set on a soft lilac ground, in which a canopy of golden leaves spreads across the top of the picture and shelters the deity below. It follows the Nathdwara arrangement of Shrinathji standing frontally between attendants, with cows at his feet, but the restrained palette of lilac and gold gives it a quieter, more ceremonial character than the brighter versions of the subject.

Shrinathji stands on a pink lotus with a dark-blue face, a peacock-feather crown and a raised left arm, a golden cloth sweeping out behind him and pink lotuses held at his side. Long strands of pearls and a garland of pink lotus petals run the length of his figure. Two women in green blouses and golden skirts stand on either side holding tall golden whisks, and below them two golden cows with red hand marks face a single upright golden leaf. A border of gold flowers on a dark ground encloses the scene.

Lilac and gold lead the palette, with the pink lotuses, the green blouses and the deep blue of the face as accents. Small gold flowers are scattered across the lilac ground in even rows, and the canopy is built from layered golden leaves picked out with red berries. The effect is calm and luminous, well suited to a softly lit living room or a prayer space.
