Etymology
Provenance
'Shrinathji with Gopis and White Cows' is a horizontal Pichwai painting set in a moonlit garden, with the deity framed in a pale shrine and attended on both sides by women and cows. It follows the Nathdwara convention of a frontal, symmetrical Shrinathji, and the wide format lets the garden, the attendants and the herd unfold across the picture.
Shrinathji stands within a gold-edged niche, his dark face beneath a crown, his raised left arm holding a pink cloth and his flared lilac and orange skirt edged in gold. Pearl strands and a garland of pink and white petals decorate the figure, and offering stands rest at his feet. Two white cows press close on either side, and four women in green, pink and coral skirts raise fruit and offerings. Banana plants and dense dark trees rise beneath a starry blue sky, and two peacocks stand beside a small lotus pool in the foreground.
Green, coral, pink and blue give the painting a fresh, garden-like palette, with the white cows and the pale niche as the brightest notes. Fine white dots in the sky and tiny flowers in the grass keep the surface lively. A yellow border of pink and blue flowers frames the scene. It is a cheerful, balanced piece for a living room or a long hallway wall.
