Etymology
Provenance
Indraprastha celebrates the homecoming of the Pandavas, who, as Diwali tradition recalls, returned to their city after thirteen years of exile. The scene sets a quiet procession against a deep olive-green ground, with gilded spirals across the upper sky and an ornate balcony at the left.
The five brothers walk in a single line with Draupadi among them, each crowned and dressed in ivory and red with gilded detailing. One carries a bow and another a mace, attributes traditionally associated with Arjuna and Bhima, while the others bear bows, swords and quivers. From the balcony above, a woman leans out to lower a garland of flowers in welcome.
Olive green, ivory, red and gold give the work a calm, celebratory warmth, and the wide expanse of open green lends the procession a sense of space and arrival. Fine line-work and gold accents on the crowns, jewellery and textiles complete a print that captures homecoming as one of Diwali's quietest joys.
