Etymology
Provenance
This rangoli-inspired art print depicts 'Lakshmi', goddess of prosperity and good fortune, whose worship is at the heart of Diwali, seated upon a great open lotus. Her figure is built entirely from flowing, interlocking shapes in the manner of a festive floor design, each area of colour outlined in ivory as if laid down in coloured powder. Framed by an arch of dots, trailing vines and a fine double border, the composition turns a familiar devotional image into a calm, symmetrical emblem for the festive home.
'Lakshmi' is shown with four arms. Her upper hands hold a lotus on either side, the flowers rising like lamps beside her head, while her lower right hand is raised with the palm facing outward in the gesture of reassurance and blessing, a small gold dot at its centre. From her lower left hand a stream of gold coins falls towards the lotus, one of the most recognisable signs of the goddess as the giver of wealth. She wears a crown crested with a lotus bud, a red mark on the brow, round gold earrings and a necklace, and her garments swirl around her in waves of indigo, rust, ochre and green that curl into spirals at her knees. Beneath her, the lotus opens in broad layered petals. Above, a single lotus sits at the apex of an arch of gold and rust dots, and flowering vines climb either side, so that the goddess appears enthroned within a garden of her own emblems.
The palette of rust, ochre, deep indigo and forest green on warm parchment is strong but softened by a mottled, grainy texture within each shape, and by the fine ivory lines that separate them. The strict symmetry of lotuses, vines and dots steadies the lively movement of the drapery. That texture belongs to the original image; the Brahm piece is a made-to-order print that reproduces it on a smooth surface.
