Etymology

Shrinathji combines “Shri” (divine, revered) and “Nath” (lord), referring to Lord Krishna as worshipped at Nathdwara, symbolizing guardianship and grace.
Pichwai derives from “pichh” (behind) and “wai” (hanging), describing cloth paintings placed behind the idol to visually narrate devotion, ritual, and sacred stories.

Pichwai painting was born in Nathdwara, a temple town where devotion spilled onto canvas in the form of story and symbol. Every brushstroke was meant for the deity, not the market, layered with ritual, repetition, and song. This hand-painted work captures Lord Shrinathji, the child form of Krishna, his dark figure adorned in jewels, lotuses, and cows grazing nearby. The composition is devotional theater frozen in pigment, a way to carry the temple wall into a home. More than image, it is memory, ritual, and worship, stitched into India’s cultural fabric for centuries.
