Provenance
This striking posthumous portrait depicts the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah, known by the epithet Rangila or "the Colorful," who ruled from 1719 to 1748. Created in 1764, the painting reflects the enduring admiration for the emperor's refined court culture, patronage of the arts, and distinctive personal style long after his death.
Rendered against a dramatic black background, Muhammad Shah appears dressed in vibrant green court attire and adorned with pearls and jewels, accompanied by a richly decorated hunting falcon. The work is attributed to Muhammad Rizavi Hindi, whose elegant use of color, line, and realism exemplifies the sophistication of late Mughal painting. Originally assembled within an album alongside Persian calligraphy, the portrait reflects the continued fusion of painting, poetry, and courtly culture that characterized the Mughal artistic tradition.
