Inspired by the celebrated love story of Nala and Damayanti from the Mahabharata, Raja Ravi Varma's Hamsa Damayanti portrays the princess of Vidarbha in a moment of tender anticipation as she receives messages from a celestial swan, the divine intermediary between herself and King Nala. Having heard of Nala's nobility and virtues, Damayanti falls deeply in love with him before they have ever met, and the sacred hamsa becomes the bearer of affection, carrying words of devotion between the destined lovers.
