Painted in 1893 by the celebrated Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma, There Comes Papa is among his most intimate and beloved domestic compositions. The work portrays his eldest daughter, Mahaprabha Thampuratty, holding her young son, Marthanda Varma, as both eagerly anticipate the arrival of the child's father. Departing from the artist's celebrated mythological subjects, the painting offers a rare glimpse into Ravi Varma's own family life, capturing a moment of tenderness and expectancy with remarkable sensitivity.

Executed in oil on canvas, the composition exemplifies Ravi Varma's mastery of European Academic Realism through its naturalistic modelling, refined treatment of light, and meticulous attention to textiles and expression.
