Shrinathji is derived from Sanskrit, combining “Shri” (श्री), meaning “divine,” “prosperous,” or “revered,” and “Nath” (नाथ), meaning “lord” or “protector.” The name refers to Lord Krishna in his form as the supreme guardian and deity of Nathdwara.
Pichwai comes from the words “pichh” (पिछ), meaning “behind,” and “wai,” meaning “hanging,” referring to cloth paintings traditionally hung behind the idol of Shrinathji in temples. Together, the painting is not merely decorative, but a visual act of devotion—designed to narrate ritual, season, and divine presence through intricate detail and symbolic ornamentation.
