Provenance
This set of four lotus décor pieces is carved from white marble in the stone-working tradition of Rajasthan, where marble has been cut, shaped and inlaid for centuries, from temple floors and palace screens to the smallest household objects. Each piece is built in two layers: a six-petalled lotus cut from a single slab, and a raised marble disc set at its centre, into which a motif is inlaid in brass. The lotus, seat of the goddess 'Lakshmi' and one of the oldest emblems of purity and abundance in Indian ornament, gives the set its form.
Two of the pieces carry the words 'Shubh' and 'Labh' in Devanagari script, meaning auspiciousness and gain. The pair is written at doorways, on account books and beside images of 'Ganesha' at Diwali, when new ledgers are opened and households invite good fortune for the year ahead; in tradition, Shubh and Labh are also named as the sons of Ganesha. The other two pieces each hold a pair of small footprints, the 'Lakshmi charan', which are drawn or placed leading into the home on the night of Lakshmi Puja so that the goddess of prosperity may find her way inside. Together, the four pieces gather the most familiar symbols of the festival into a single set.
The soft ivory of the marble, with its faint natural grey veining, sets off the warm, hand-finished gleam of the brass, and the stacked lotus-and-disc form gives each piece a quiet, sculptural depth. Each piece is individually handcrafted; veining, tone and the finish of the inlay will vary slightly from piece to piece.
