Etymology
Provenance
This geometric rangoli-inspired art print takes the form of a richly bordered panel, its deep indigo field filled with a flowing lattice of lotuses. Like many rangoli designs, it multiplies a single auspicious motif within a regular grid, so that the pattern could in principle extend indefinitely, and then contains it within layered borders. Here the repetition is broken at the very centre by a single lotus ringed with golden dots, a small point of emphasis that gives the whole design a focus.
Fine ivory lines swell and narrow to form a net of pointed, onion-shaped compartments across the indigo ground, knotted at each junction with a small rust or gold roundel. Within the compartments, upright lotuses in rust and in sage green alternate from row to row, each with a slender stem ending in a small bead. Between them sit little stepped, tiered forms in ivory, stacked like miniature shrines, and short vertical columns of dots. At the centre, one rust lotus is set apart by a ring of gold dots. The field is enclosed by a red frame and an indigo border of alternating lotus buds and paired dots, with squared key motifs in rust at each corner, all set on a broad parchment margin. The composition reads like a festive floor design lifted onto the wall, orderly and devotional, with the lotus repeated as a kind of quiet refrain.
The palette pairs a deep, slightly mottled indigo with rust, ochre, sage and ivory, the warm lotuses glowing against the cool ground. Clean ivory outlines keep every element distinct, while a gently weathered texture across the indigo and the parchment margin gives the image the character of an aged painted surface. That texture is part of the original design; the Brahm piece is a made-to-order print that reproduces it on a smooth surface.
