Provenance

Three other attendants arrange themselves around her, their tasks distributed and unhurried. The scene is composed with the specific attentiveness Pahari artists brought to court interiors — the ewers and water pots in the background noted, the handmaiden's costume deliberately recalling older Chamba painting conventions, a thread of visual memory woven into a later work.
This is an interior without drama: nothing is happening except the ordinary rituals of preparation. That ordinariness is the point. The Pahari tradition returned to scenes of feminine leisure with a consistency that suggests a genuine visual investment in the texture of private life.
