Provenance
This rangoli-inspired art print places the face of 'Jagannath', the deity enshrined at Puri in Odisha, at the centre of a many-ringed circular design of the kind drawn on festive floors. His iconography is among the most recognisable in India: a round dark face, enormous circular eyes and a broad crescent smile, forms that remain instantly legible even when reduced, as here, to a few bold shapes. Surrounding the face with concentric bands of petals, beads and small temple forms, the design turns a devotional image into a radiating rangoli.
At the centre, Jagannath's black face is ringed by a circle of ivory beads. His great round eyes, white with black pupils, are outlined in red and crowned by sweeping ivory brows; beneath a U-shaped ivory and ochre mark on the forehead hangs a gold drop and a small cluster of white dots, and his red crescent smile is edged in ivory, flanked by little leaf sprigs at the cheeks. Around him the mandala expands in rings: a band of red petals on ochre, a deep indigo ring studded with ivory roundels and leaf shapes, then a band of small rust-coloured temple spires set among scalloped ivory forms, followed by alternating rust, teal and green petals and a fine outer circle of dots, with small pointed finials marking the four directions. The eye is drawn steadily inward from the petalled edge to the calm, wide-eyed face at its heart.
Red, ochre, indigo, teal and ivory are laid down as flat, crisp shapes on a warm parchment ground, the black of the face giving the whole composition a strong, grounding centre. Subtle mottling within the colour and a softly aged ground lend warmth without disturbing the clarity of the design. These textures belong to the original image; the Brahm piece is a made-to-order print that reproduces them on a smooth surface.
