The dialogue between Yama and Yamuna is among the earliest philosophical exchanges in the Vedic tradition, appearing in the Yajur Veda and later echoed in the Atharva Veda. Twins born to Surya, the sun god, they embody complementary realms: Yamuna, the life-giving river, and Yama, the lord of death and dharma. Their conversation explores mortality, the afterlife, and the nature of the soul, laying the philosophical foundation later developed in the Katha Upanishad.

This print draws on the Mughal miniature tradition, using a winding river, stylised trees, and a balanced landscape to create a timeless setting. The Yamuna divides the composition both physically and symbolically, placing Yama on one bank and Yamuna on the other, transforming the river into a metaphor for the threshold between life and death.
