Etymology
Provenance
'Blue, Lilac and Violet' brings together three flowering plates from BRAHM's Vedic Flora series: 'Pushkara', the blue water lily, 'Prishniparni', the lilac-flowered herb, and 'Kushtha', the violet-headed herb. Each is composed as a botanical study, with the whole plant rising over its root or rhizome on a parchment-toned ground, detail studies set around it and the Sanskrit name lettered in Devanagari below, with the Atharvaveda reference printed on the plate: 12.1.24 for Pushkara, 2.25 for Prishniparni and 5.4 for Kushtha. In all three, tall stems and flower heads lead the eye upward, so the set hangs as a calm, upright trio.
In 'Pushkara', two open blue and lilac water lilies with finely veined, pointed petals surround golden stamens, with a closed bud between them and broad, rounded leaves spreading above a knotted rhizome. 'Prishniparni' sends up four tall spikes of small, pea-like lilac and pink flowers above slender, pale-striped leaves, with a beaded chain of seed pods at the edge. In 'Kushtha', three rounded heads of purple filaments sit in spiny, olive-green bracts above large, deeply toothed leaves and a ridged root, with a feathered seed and a root cross-section beside it.
The three plates share one cool palette of blue, lilac, rose, violet and plum, balanced by grey-green, sage and olive leaves and warm brown roots on the same ochre-cream parchment. Fine pen lines trace every petal, leaf and rootlet, and the faint mottling of the ground is visible in the images themselves. Hung side by side, the set suits a bedroom, a study or a quiet reading corner.
