Etymology
Provenance
'Fig, Thorn and Blossom' gathers the three branch plates of BRAHM's Vedic Flora series into a set of three: 'Udumbara', the fruiting fig, 'Shami', the thorned flowering branch, and 'Parna Palasha', the flame-orange blossom. Each is composed as a botanical study, with the branch crossing a parchment-toned ground, detail studies set around it and the Sanskrit name lettered in Devanagari below, with the Atharvaveda reference printed on the plate: 19.31 for Udumbara, 6.11.1 for Shami and 3.5 for Parna Palasha. Hung together, the three read as one study of the branch in fruit, in thorn and in flower.
In 'Udumbara', clusters of round figs in green, red and deep purple grow along a rough, knotted branch among broad, veined leaves, with a halved fig, a fruiting twig and a cross-section of the branch at the edges. 'Shami' is hung with fine paired leaflets and upright yellow flower spikes, its stem armed with sharp thorns and long, slender pods hanging at the lower right. In 'Parna Palasha', curved flame-orange petals unfurl from dark, velvety buds in three dense clusters along a bare branch, set among rounded grey-green leaves, with an opened pod and its seed beside them.
Across the set, the palette moves from the plum and red of the fig, through the butter yellow of the shami blossom, to the vermilion and gold-orange of the palasha, held together by olive and sage foliage, umber and grey-brown wood and the shared ochre-cream parchment. Fine pen lines and delicate hatching describe each leaf, thorn and petal, and the faint mottling of the ground is visible in the images themselves. Hung in a row or stacked in a column, the three frames suit a console wall, a hallway or a dining room.
