Etymology
Provenance
The Anna Pakshi Mysore Painting originates from the classical mural and miniature painting traditions of South India, which trace their visual language to the Ajanta Caves and Badami Caves. After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century, many master artisans migrated to the Mysore region, where they were nurtured under the patronage of the Wodeyar dynasty.
The Wodeyar kings, beginning with Raja Wadiyar (1578–1617 A.D.) and later Krishna Raja Wadiyar III (1794–1868 A.D.), encouraged painters to refine a style that combined delicate linear work, subtle Gesso relief, layered natural pigments, and the luminous application of 22KT gold leaf. This became the hallmark of Mysore painting—elegant, intricate, and deeply symbolic.
Painted by Smt. Chaitra Roopa, this artwork continues the lineage of traditional Mysore ateliers, preserving the cultural and spiritual symbolism embedded in the Anna Pakshi motif. Recognized under Geographical Indication (GI Application No. 32) and awarded GI status in 2005 as the 26th registered GI product of India, the painting reflects both regional authenticity and the mastery of centuries-old South Indian craftsmanship.
