Madhubani Paintings

Rooted in the ancient Mithila region of Bihar, Madhubani painting - also known as Mithila art - is one of India’s most revered living folk traditions. Originally created on the walls and floors of homes during weddings, festivals, and sacred rituals, these paintings were never meant to be merely decorative. They were visual prayers - symbols of protection, prosperity, fertility, and cosmic harmony. Legend traces the origin of Madhubani art to the Treta Yuga, when King Janaka commissioned artists to adorn the city of Mithila for the wedding of Sita and Lord Rama. Since then, the tradition has been passed down through generations, primarily by women artists, preserving ritual symbolism, disciplined technique, and spiritual intention. Characterized by intricate linework, dense patterning, and symbolic motifs, Madhubani paintings transform every surface into a field of meaning. Fish represent fertility and abundance. Peacocks evoke love and devotion. Serpents signify divine protection. Birds, trees, and deities are rendered within structured borders that reflect balance and interconnectedness. Empty space is rarely left untouched - abundance fills every corner. Traditionally painted using natural pigments derived from flowers, leaves, roots, and minerals, and created in the non-rubbing tradition (where strokes are never erased), each artwork carries a sense of continuity and devotion. Recognized under India’s Geographical Indication (GI) registry, Madhubani painting remains protected in its regional authenticity - a living heritage of Mithila.
