Etymology

The term Madhubani translates to “forest of honey” (Madhu – honey, Bani/Vani – forest), referring to the fertile cultural landscape of the Mithila region.
Also known as Mithila Painting, the art form reflects the identity of the land and its people. Motifs such as the peacock symbolise love, romance and spiritual devotion, while birds often represent harmony between human life and nature. Fish denote fertility and prosperity; serpents stand as divine protectors.

Provenance

Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, originates from the ancient Mithila region of Bihar, where it is traditionally traced to the Treta Yuga and the wedding of Sita and Lord Rama. According to legend, King Janaka commissioned artists to adorn the city with sacred imagery — transforming walls and courtyards into vibrant expressions of celebration, devotion and destiny.

Within this tradition, the peacock and bird motifs carry layered symbolic meaning. The peacock, associated with beauty, joy and spiritual devotion, often appears in ceremonial compositions linked to marriage and sacred union. Birds in flight or paired formations suggest harmony between the human and natural worlds, reflecting balance, companionship and continuity. Rendered in dense geometric patterning with little negative space, the composition embodies abundance and auspicious energy — qualities central to Mithila’s ritual art.

Recognised as a Geographical Indication (GI Application No. 37), Madhubani Painting was awarded GI status in 2006–2007, protecting its regional authenticity and inherited techniques. This piece, painted by Shri Lakshmi Kumari, Chief Artist of Mithila, continues a lineage shaped by devotion, symbolism and disciplined craftsmanship.
