Etymology
Provenance
Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, originates from the ancient Mithila region of Bihar and is traditionally practiced as a ceremonial art form embedded in ritual life. Its cultural origin is associated with the Treta Yuga, when King Janaka is believed to have commissioned artists to decorate the city during the wedding of Sita and Lord Rama, establishing a legacy of sacred wall painting as blessing and protection.
Within the devotional vocabulary of Madhubani art, the figure of Krishna occupies a central spiritual presence. In this composition, Krishna stands surrounded by the Gopikas, whose collective devotion represents surrender, joy, and divine love. The arrangement is rhythmic and symmetrical, with bold contour lines, flat organic colour, and densely filled floral and geometric borders creating emotional intensity and sacred movement. Every surface is ornamented, reflecting the Madhubani principle that no space remains spiritually empty.
Hand-painted on fabric using organic pigments and following the non-rubbing tradition — where strokes are never erased or corrected — the work preserves ritual discipline and symbolic integrity.
Recognised under Geographical Indication (GI Application No. 37) and awarded GI status in 2006–2007 as the 30th registered GI product of India, Madhubani painting remains protected in its regional authenticity. This artwork is painted by Shri Surendra Paswan, Chief Artisan, GI Panchayat Mithila, continuing the lineage of inherited technique and devotional storytelling.
