Provenance
Madhubani painting, also known as Mithila painting, originates from the ancient Mithila region of Bihar and is traditionally practiced as ceremonial folk art woven into ritual, seasonal, and domestic life. Its cultural origin is associated with the Treta Yuga, when King Janaka is believed to have commissioned artists to adorn Mithila during the wedding of Sita and Lord Rama, establishing sacred painting as a form of blessing, protection, and celebration.
This composition embodies the devotional and intellectual essence of the Madhubani tradition through the depiction of Goddess Saraswati — the divine embodiment of knowledge, music, wisdom, and refined consciousness. Seated with her veena, she represents creative expression, disciplined learning, and spiritual clarity. The swan beneath her symbolizes discernment (the ability to distinguish truth from illusion), while the structured borders and rhythmic patterns create a sacred visual field that reflects order, balance, and cosmic harmony.
Executed in the refined Kachni style, characterized by intricate linear detailing and controlled cross-hatching, the work relies on disciplined linework and selective colour application to enhance symbolic depth. Painted on paper using organic and water colours, and created in the non-rubbing tradition, the composition preserves ritual sanctity and inherited craftsmanship.
Recognised under Geographical Indication (GI Application No. 37) and awarded GI status in 2006–2007 as the 30th registered GI product of India, Madhubani painting remains protected in its regional authenticity. This artwork is painted by Shri Poonam Kumari, Mithila, Bihar, continuing the lineage of sacred storytelling through folk practice.
