Provenance
Removed from any temple architecture, the devotional act becomes the whole scene: women gathered in concentrated worship before a Shiva linga, their attention undivided, the intensity of their focus the subject as much as the object. The composition belongs to the Devagandhari Ragini — a musical mode personified as a devotional act — from a Ragamala series produced in Chamba around 1700.
The Ragamala is a genre of Indian painting that associates musical modes with specific figures, seasons, and emotional states — each raga given a visual body. In Chamba, the iconography of Devagandhari is consistent across several series, reflecting a stable visual language for this mode. This leaf carries that convention with a directness that reads as both document and devotion.
