Etymology
Provenance
The Gaja Shima Mysore Painting originates from the classical mural and miniature traditions of South India, which drew inspiration from the sacred visual vocabulary of the Ajanta Caves and Badami Caves. Following the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century, master artisans dispersed, with a significant number settling in the Mysore region, where the Wodeyar kings fostered the evolution of a distinct painting style.
Under the patronage of Raja Wadiyar (1578–1617 A.D.) and further refined during the reign of Krishna Raja Wadiyar III (1794–1868 A.D.), Mysore painting developed hallmark techniques such as delicate Gesso relief, fine linear precision, layered natural pigments, and the use of 22KT gold leaf to embellish compositions.
This artwork, painted by Shri Chandrika, continues the classical atelier lineage of Mysore painting, capturing both mythological significance and royal ceremonial grandeur. Recognized under Geographical Indication (GI Application Nos. 32 & 60) and awarded GI status in 2005 and 2006, the Gaja Shima painting preserves the authenticity, craftsmanship, and symbolic richness of South India’s cultural heritage.
