Etymology
Provenance
Created by Pardhan Gond artist Ms. Budhwariya Vyam of Madhya Pradesh, Gaja Vriksha - The Cosmic Elephant Tree continues the devotional and narrative traditions of the Gond community, where painting functions as memory, mythology, and reverence toward nature.
In Gond cosmology, animals are not merely creatures - they are spiritual presences. The elephant, a symbol of strength, wisdom, and stability, becomes the axis of this composition. From the trunk of a majestic blue elephant rises a flourishing tree, visually uniting earth and growth. Surrounding it stand four elephants in vivid red, cyan, yellow, and green - guardians of balance, direction, and harmony.
Rendered in intricate dot-and-line technique, the patterned surfaces animate each form, transforming the elephants into pulsating embodiments of life force. The composition reflects coexistence - strength nurturing growth, community sustaining nature.
Gond painting entered national discourse through the pioneering work of Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose artistic vision was championed by modernist painter Jagdish Swaminathan. Today, the art form carries official Geographical Indication recognition (GI No. 701, awarded 2022) and is registered as the 439th GI product of India.
