Etymology
Provenance
'Ganesha', the elephant-headed deity invoked at the start of new undertakings and widely worshipped at Diwali alongside 'Lakshmi', is presented here in an unusually intimate, cropped composition. The figure is pressed against the left-hand edge of the frame, which divides the face so that a single eye, the great sweep of one ear and the curl of the trunk carry the whole portrait. Rendered in a mosaic-like surface of small ivory and gold tiles against a deep teal-black ground, the image translates familiar iconography into a restrained contemporary format that relies on scale, cropping and contrast rather than narrative.
A tall gold crown of leaf-shaped points rises from the head, banded with teal and deep red and fixed with a circular ornament. The ear opens outwards like a fan, its gold surface worked in spirals that echo the swirling pattern of the background, and a round gold earring hangs beside the cheek. The eye is heavy-lidded and calm, gazing down and away. The trunk, edged with bands of gold scrollwork, descends in a long S-curve before turning into a tight spiral at the lower left. Across the body falls a teal sash patterned with small gold flowers over a maroon garment, and a gold armband sits on the upper arm. The mood throughout is one of repose: nothing moves but the circling ground, and the spiral of the trunk draws the eye back into the figure.
Ivory and burnished gold dominate the figure, warmed by maroon and cooled by teal, while more than half of the picture is left to a near-black field in which faint concentric circles are drawn in the same fine tile pattern. This generous negative space gives the figure presence and suits a wall where a quieter devotional image is wanted. The tile-like texture and the dimensional look of the gold belong to the original image; the Brahm piece is a made-to-order print that reproduces this mosaic effect on a flat surface.
