Provenance
Mysore painting evolved from the classical mural traditions of South India, drawing inspiration from the sacred visual language of the Ajanta Caves and Badami Caves. Following the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century, a group of master artisans migrated to Mysore, where their craft found a new home under the generous patronage of the Wodeyar dynasty.
Initially encouraged by Raja Wadiyar (1578–1617 A.D.), the art form was further refined during the reign of Krishna Raja Wadiyar III (1794–1868 A.D.), emerging as a distinctive Mysore style characterized by fine linear precision, soft modeling, subtle Gesso relief, and delicate 22KT gold leaf embellishments. This period witnessed a synthesis of natural pigments, intricate detailing, and devotional motifs, creating artworks that were both aesthetically graceful and spiritually resonant.
Recognized under Geographical Indication (GI Application No. 32) and awarded GI status in 2005 as the 26th registered GI product of India, Mysore painting continues to preserve its regional authenticity and refined craftsmanship.
This Golden Cow painting is executed by Dr. J.D. Raja (National Awardee), carrying forward the centuries-old lineage of Mysore atelier practice, and embodying the sacred symbolism, regal elegance, and timeless heritage of South Indian art.
