Provenance
Krishna stands beneath a flowering tree, playing the flute to the gopis who gather around him. The scene represents Gujari Ragini, one of the musical modes depicted in the Ragamala genre — a tradition that mapped the emotional world of Indian classical music onto painting. Each raga was associated with a particular season, time of day, and emotional atmosphere, and the painter's task was to make that feeling visible.
The work comes from Aurangabad in the Deccan, a centre that absorbed influence from the Mughal court to the north and developed its own confident variant of the idiom. The Deccan style is known for its jewel-toned colour and a certain decorative precision in its rendering of costumes, jewellery, and plant life.
Krishna's paduka sandals are a distinctive iconographic detail. The gopis' arrangement and the flowering setting anchor the scene firmly within the visual grammar of Ragamala painting — a genre designed to be read as much as it was to be looked at.
