Deep teal — the colour of the garden's reflection in still water, of malachite, of the finest Safavid tile — serves as the ground for Gulfam's ornate medallion allover composition. Against this richly coloured field, ivory ornament fills every part of the surface: a central medallion surrounded by the all-over botanical fill of the classic Persian tradition, the two design elements working together to create a carpet of unusual visual density and depth. The teal ground amplifies the ivory ornament, making each motif appear to glow above the deep field.
Woven by hand in Uttar Pradesh using Silk Wool Blend, Gulfam belongs to the most opulent position in the Persian carpet tradition — the dark-ground allover with central medallion, the format that appears in the finest Kashan and Isfahan pieces of the Safavid period. In Silk Wool Blend, the deep teal achieves a richness that wool cannot match: layers of colour apparent within a single strand, the pile appearing almost three-dimensional as directional light moves across it. The ivory ornament provides the luminous contrast that makes the deep ground perform.
