Etymology
Provenance
Chandraghanta depicts the third form of the Navadurga, the destroyer of demons, whose courage is joined with deep inner calm. The painting renders her in bold, angular Cubist planes, its sharp diagonals and strong contrasts giving the composition a sense of martial energy held in perfect balance.
Chandraghanta is seated with her lion, which roars at the lower left, its head built from sharp golden facets. In her raised hands she holds a pink lotus, an arrow and a tall golden trident, and she wears a tall crown set with a flame-like red jewel, a large gold earring and a red veil falling over her shoulders. Her eyes are lowered and her expression composed, framed by a pale gold halo – the stillness at the heart of her strength.
Deep red, rust, ochre and cream are set against black and navy, the strongest contrasts in the series, lending the work drama and intensity. The repeated triangles and crisp edges create a dynamic surface, tempered by the calm of the goddess's face.
