Etymology
Provenance
Shailaputri opens the Navadurga, the nine forms of the Goddess honoured across the nine nights of Navratri, with the first and most grounded of them all: the daughter of the mountains. This painting renders her through a contemporary Cubist vocabulary, breaking the familiar devotional image into faceted planes of colour while keeping her calm, steady presence intact – a fitting image for a strong spiritual beginning.
Shailaputri is seated beside her white bull, Nandi, holding a tall golden trident in one hand and a pink lotus in the other, her traditional attributes. She wears a crown set with a flame-like ornament, round gold earrings and a softly draped pink and ivory sari, her eyes lowered in quiet composure. Behind her, a great gold halo and stacked triangular peaks evoke the mountains from which she takes her name, with a pale sun rising above them.
Blush pink, ivory and rust are set against slate blue and burnished gold, the colour laid down in overlapping translucent facets that give the surface depth and movement. The geometric construction lends the figure a monumental stillness, balancing modern abstraction with the serenity of devotional imagery.
