Etymology
Provenance
'Abhaya Ganapati' presents Ganesha through the clean geometry and restrained colour of Indo-Bauhaus design. Seated with one hand raised in blessing, he is composed from bold circles, triangles and stepped planes, so the familiar image of the remover of obstacles becomes a calm, modern study in balance.
Ganesha sits in profile with his eyes closed, a white tilak on his deep blue brow and a domed ochre crown rising to a small flame-shaped finial. Broad ochre ears frame his face, and his trunk sweeps down and curls into a spiral. His right hand is raised, palm outward, in the gesture of reassurance, and a round ochre sweet rests on a dark stand beside him. His body breaks into interlocking triangles and half-circles of indigo, ochre, charcoal and ivory, set on stepped plinths at either side. An ochre sun hangs at the upper left, and to the right an indigo arched window holds a single white lotus on a lily pad.
Indigo, ochre, charcoal and warm ivory make a refined, grounded palette, with the white lotus and tilak as the brightest accents. Flat fields of colour and crisp edges give the painting a graphic clarity that suits contemporary interiors. It works well on its own at an entrance, in a study or in a puja corner, and it is also available as part of a set of three with Lakshmi and Krishna.
