Etymology
Provenance
'Kamalasana' presents Goddess Lakshmi through the clean geometry and restrained colour of Indo-Bauhaus design. Seated upon a great layered lotus and holding a flower in each raised hand, she is composed from bold planes, circles and triangles, so the familiar image of the goddess of prosperity becomes a calm, modern study in balance.
Lakshmi sits frontally with her eyes closed, a golden halo and a crowned finial rising above her dark hair. Her face is divided down the centre into ivory and indigo halves, a quiet play on light and shadow, and she wears drop earrings and gold bangles on wrists that hold two white lotuses aloft. An ochre veil falls over her shoulders, and her body and garments break into interlocking triangles of indigo, ochre, charcoal and ivory. At the upper left hangs an ochre sun, and to the right an indigo arched window holds a single white lotus on a lily pad.
Indigo, ochre, charcoal and warm ivory make a refined, grounded palette, with the white lotuses as the brightest accents. Flat fields of colour and crisp edges give the painting a graphic clarity that suits contemporary interiors. It works well on its own in a living room or puja corner, and it is also available as part of a set of three with Ganesha and Krishna.
