Etymology
Provenance
'Tash Ki Mehfil' is a close, overhead view of a gathering, painted in the manner of Henri Matisse's patterned interiors, where a figure and the textile around it share equal weight. Hands fan out playing cards over a richly patterned red carpet, and the whole scene is cropped tightly so that the viewer sits at the table. The painting takes Matisse's flat, saturated planes of colour and sets them in an everyday Indian domestic moment of cards, company and shared snacks.
A wrist stacked with pale bangles and a hand holding a fan of cards, with the king of hearts showing, enter from the top. Another hand reaches into a two-compartment wooden tray of almonds and cashews, while a further fan of cards appears at the lower right. At the centre lies a face-down card with an ornamental blue and gold pattern. The carpet is scattered with indigo and teal leaves, and sprigs of white flowers cross the foreground. The figure on the left wears a cream garment printed with blue leaf shapes.
Vermilion red dominates, cut by indigo, teal, cream and the warm browns of the nuts and the tray. Colour is laid in broad, flat shapes with the pattern added in quick, visible strokes, so the carpet reads almost like a printed textile. The tight crop and the strong diagonals of the arms and cards give the work its movement, while the repeating leaf motif ties the figure and the carpet together.
