Etymology
Provenance
'Shrinathji in Indigo on Crimson' is a Pichwai painting set entirely on a red ground, so the niche, border and base all share the same deep colour. The deity's indigo skirt, the one cool block in a warm picture, becomes the focus. It follows the Nathdwara layout, with a central figure, a ring of cows and a platform, and reads as a bold, saturated version of that classic arrangement.
Shrinathji has a dark-blue face with a crown and a peacock-feather halo, a skirt of pale blue pleated tiers with tiny red flowers, and a raised left arm with a sleeve of the same blue. An orange cloth rises from his hand and another sweeps to the left. Pink lotuses, a petal garland and long pearl strands decorate the figure. White cows and a few tan ones, with red marks, circle the border, and two yellow roundels with radiating petals sit at the base beside two gold stands.
Crimson dominates, set against indigo, orange and yellow, with the white cows and pearls providing relief. The red is painted in a flat, slightly uneven wash, and tiny white dots add a fine sparkle. The overall effect is rich and festive, well suited to a warm room.
