Provenance
The heroine's longing for her absent lover is so intense that it draws a deer and doe — otherwise shy - to her side. She fondles one of the deer, dressed in a transparent muslin shawl; at the right, an attendant holds a stringed instrument, placing the scene within a musical register. The gazes are intent, the heroine's head turned at the distinctive angle characteristic of early Pahari figure conventions - an impossible turn that reads, entirely convincingly, as distraction and divided attention.
This is an early Pahari work, dated around 1715, before the schools had fully consolidated their individual styles. The elongated proportions and the use of the deer as a measure of the heroine's emotional state - their presence a sign of the extraordinary condition of her feeling - are markers of a visual tradition that was still finding its terms.
