Provenance
Spring arrives, and Krishna seats himself on a swing with Radha. Around them, the cowherd boys and milkmaids play music, dance, and keep the swing in motion — a scene of seasonal celebration that the Hindola Raga makes its own. In Sanskrit, hindola means swing, and the raga carries with it the particular quality of young love in springtime: warm, suspended between joy and longing.
This painting belonged to a Ragamala series — a genre in which musical modes are personified as scenes, figures, or emotional states. Produced in the Pahari kingdoms around 1795, the image brings together the devotional world of Radha and Krishna with the sensory world of music and season, the swing at the centre of both.
