Provenance
This grand Mughal court painting depicts Hulagu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan and founder of the Ilkhanid dynasty in Iran, presiding over a ceremonial feast attended by princes, nobles, and military commanders. The work was created for an illustrated Chingiz-nama commissioned during the reign of Emperor Akbar, who proudly traced his ancestry to the Mongol rulers through his maternal lineage.
Produced by artists Lal, Dharam Das, and Padarath, the painting exemplifies the collaborative nature of the Mughal imperial atelier. Richly detailed carpets, canopies, and courtly figures evoke the splendor of Mongol rulership while reflecting the refined artistic language developed under Akbar's patronage.
