Provenance
This dramatic battle scene comes from the Akbarnama (Book of Akbar), the official chronicle commissioned to celebrate the history of the Mughal dynasty. It depicts the reconquest of northern India in 1555, when the Mughal emperor Humayun regained control of his empire from Afghan rulers with the support of Persian allies.
Although Humayun did not personally participate in the battle shown, his triumphant presence at the center of the composition serves a symbolic purpose. Commissioned by his son, Emperor Akbar, the painting honors Humayun’s role in restoring Mughal rule and establishing the foundation upon which the empire would flourish.
